While Turron was a young black teen, he was wrongfully convicted. After graduating from high school, Turron wanted to go to college. However, he was charged with committing a crime he didn't commit. He had to fight for his life. His journey is shared here.

Black Light Mass Incarceration Show
 
In his story, Akiba describes how incarceration in New York is different from incarceration in North Carolina. Additionally, he describes how he wants to create a program for parents that informs them about autism at an early stage. Akiba believes that by creating this program, parents will be able to recognize the signs of autism in their children earlier, leading to a more effective treatment plan. He also believes that this program could help reduce the number of people with autism who end up in the criminal justice system.

As I listened to the various stories of people dying in prisons and jails because of medical neglect, I could not help but feel heavy-hearted. No one should be denied access to medical care when they are in the middle of a medical emergency. This is not public safety. If you have any ideas on what we can do in order to keep our community members safe while they are incarcerated, please reach out to us as we would love to hear your thoughts.

This week I interviewed Amanda Hall, the Justice Director at Dream.org. Before joining Dream.org, Amanda was a Policy Strategist at the ACLU of Kentucky. Amanda was a leader of Kentucky Smart on Crime, a broad-based coalition working for common-sense justice reforms that enhance public safety, strengthen communities, and promote cost-effective sentencing alternatives. Prior to policy work, Amanda served as program director of The Healing Place for Women in Louisville, KY. Amanda graduated from the University of Louisville with a Master’s degree in Social Work. Amanda has been directly impacted by the criminal legal system and has a personal passion and drive to end mass incarceration and to create a better world in its place.
